The Missing Pieces

Above- ‘The Missing Pieces’, oil on canvas, 120x100cm

On my return from France in 2011, I found myself in unchartered territory, attempting to  find my antipodean self and my place in the world. There was a lot of energy in this work as I came to terms with the many guises I felt as a women: youth, adulthood and crone.

DSC_0150

Above- ‘The Fish of Life’, oil on canvas, 90x90cm

I painted this in my attic in France with light from the roof windows filtering into the white-washed room. This time of rural bliss was coming to an end as I would return to Australia soon. I experimented with textures and text. It seemed that every story held another one, like the Russian dolls that hide inside each other.

Above – ‘Passion Exists’, oil on canvas, 90x90cm

This painting was another story from my time in France where I deconstructed my idea of relationship as it began to deconstruct itself. What I discovered, along with the wild brush strokes and the addition of a heart that was an earlier work torn in a moment of wild emotion, was that passion truly does exist. As artist and as a woman.

I painted in the attic every day, listening to French radio and browsing social media to keep in touch with dear friends in Australia. When Fukushima erupted onto the world stage, sweeping a highly radioactive across the northern hemisphere, I continued to tell my stories. This world was everything that seemed relevant to me at this point in time.

A woman is more than her beauty; she is wise and capable and refuses to have her wings clipped by circumstances. This painting received the International Womens Day Award in Bega, 2012.

In every event that shapes the world there is also a myriad of personal stories. The radiation from Fukushima had entered the northern jet-stream. The French Nuclear Bureau recommended that pregnant women avoid eating meat, dairy or leafy vegetables. We took action and covered our vegetable garden with a tarp against radioactive rainfall. It was a world-wide catastrophe. But my own personal story was equally compelling and I tried to make sense of the events by throwing paint on to canvas in my attic refuge.

Nude 2

Above -‘Nude 1’, mixed media, 60x60cm

I returned to life drawing, in an effort to refine my technique. This is an experimentation using drawings on paper and oils an canvas. I like the dynamism of this pose.

Nude 3

Above -‘Nude 2’, mixed media, 60x60cm

Another experimentation using drawings on paper and oils an canvas. I returned to the work and continued to add colour. I didn’t try to control the paper as it gave an interesting texture.

Odessey

Above – ‘The Scribe’, oil on canvas, 60x60cm

I went to Greece. On a whim. To find more about a Greek artist/writer. It was a fabulous adventure. I was in love with the story.

The Divine Tree’, oil on canvas, 60x60cm

‘There is no going back. The collaboration between artist and muse began in a time when there was only the artist. She needed a muse and searched along the river. The water sang as it flowed over rocks. Create. She walked the mountain and talked to the trees. Create they whispered. She knew there was only one path. It began in the beginning of time and stretched to her bones.’

‘The Fannyettes’, oil on canvas, 160x120cmDSC_0175

Mardi Gras, Sydney. I had a joint exhibition at Soho Galleries and this painting faced Crown Street. It stopped quite a few passers-by.

‘Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!’, oil on canvas, 90x76cm

Another Mardi Gras offering. My ex was changing gender and vaginas were on my mind.

DSC_0003

Above –  ‘Heaven’, oil on canvas, 90x76cm

‘Heaven’ was a nightclub for the queer folk of Canberra. I danced to house beats then went home and painted.

The gift of unspeakable Love

Above – ‘The gift of unspeakable Love’, oil on canvas 60x60cm

She had wings and desire. I played with body structure and scraped lines into wet oil paint.

Not Forgotten

Above – ‘Not Forgotten’, oil on canvas, 90x76cm

Often an image sets up a series. I wasn’t sure where to begin but this painting was the mover and shaker behind ‘Unravelling Athens’.

DSC_0172

A simple and joyous homage to Nature

DSC_0198

Above – ‘The beast within’, oil on canvas, 98x80cm

An early work painted at the Shallow Crossing property. I heard my roar. I claimed it and put it on canvas.

Pip

Above – ‘Portrait of Pip’, oil on canvas, 120x100cm

Painted for the Shirley Hannan Portrait Prize. I didn’t make the final selection. Pip was probably too wild.

He left, in search of the meaning of life. I stayed, mourning the parting. Art is often inspired by this way.

Sleeping with the Cat

Above – ‘Sleeping with the cat’, oil on canvas 60x60cm

I like the tension in this painting, the sense of solitude and comfort.

DSC_0191

Above – ‘The Wow girl’, oil on canvas 98x90cm

I’ve always loved nudes. The human body is so expressive and dynamic. I guess I’m on a bit of a mission to celebrate our nakedness, stripped of imposed social constructs.

Our Islands

Above – ‘Our Islands’, oil on canvas 60x60cm

Before I went on a Greek adventure, I tried to imagine the city. I knew our experiences were very different so I painted his white-robed city connected to my wild continent.

Love the Moment

Above – ‘Loving the Moment’, oil on canvas 60x60cm

I wanted to make some simple, happy images scratching the surface of the thick paint.

The Kiss

Under the moon, an embrace that spans time and distance.

We played all Summer. The forest protected us from the harsh Australian sun and the sea sang in the background.

DragonflySmallAbove – ‘Dragonfly dreaming’, oil on canvas 104x120cm

This is a very old work. From a time when the river sang her lullaby and I roamed the mountains in freedom. It hung from the ceiling of our old hut and the small marsupial mice called antechinus jumped on the springy canvas. I could never erase their traces.

When I was twenty I moved from Melbourne to the wilds of the Snowy River and lived there for ten years. Everything was magical.

DSC_0005

Above -‘Dragon Dreaming’, oil on board, 24x30inch

A very early work, subtle and innocent.  Painted in the days when I watched the arc of the sun and rise of the moon above the forest and nothing ever disturbed the peace.

The Clyde

Above – ‘The Clyde’, oil on canvas 95x89cm

The river roared, carrying with her the trees ripped from the forest edges. Yet on the edge of the spilt-over stream birds played in the stillness and I sat in wonder.

DSC_0040

Top Right – ‘Wombat Wedding’, particle board, 56x40cm

I was making ceramic characters, inspired by the forest animals and tales of Wind in the Willows. I invented stories, researched costumes from early Australian photographs, made up names. The pieces were displayed in David Jones Stores travelling Exhibition, galleries across the east coast and a few Canberra venues like Beaver galleries. The project was picked up by a couple of Sydney businessmen. We made forays into global merchandising and I had an existential crisis about the ethics of merchandising. There is still a small collection of ceramics, that I would like to donate for a public collection. This is a painting from that time.

Once upon a time, I did live the fairy tale. It was long ago and full of tiny marsupials.
