There was a lot to process in Athens. I had been travelling for over a month, wild camping on the islands, and living on little more than nectarines and sunshine. Life was very sweet. The grime and excitement of Athens was an extreme contrast to the clear mountain streams in the north and the hot sands of the south. But I had the burning desire to explore the streets and experience the edge of anarchy.

Not only was I inspired by the chaos of Athens, I also needed to finish a work I began in 2012. Originally a portrait of an ex-lover, this canvas became the perfect ground for a new painting. I began by adding some street-art iconography but couldn’t bring myself to completely deface the image. Somehow it seemed just right, a blend of old and new that I’d rather not psychoanalyse. He’s a very nice human being after-all.

Underlying Athens lay a rich decay of ancient history.  But it was your bones that rattled my sensibilities even more than the Acropolis.

I took my heart to Athens and Athens added it to the pile of broken bones that the city is built on. That’s what makes art worth something. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

After sleeping on beaches and bathing under waterfalls in the northern forests, renting an apartment in Athens was surreal. So was my emotional landscape.

I drew while he smoked on the balcony. I have to thank him for drawing me to Greece in the first place. Even if the lessons were hard, the experience was worthy of the gods and goddesses who seemed to lurk in every Homeric corner of the country.

My pulse beat along to Exarchia’s anarchist heart. As a foreigner, I could never make my mark in this city of street art and political tension, but I admired every pore of its grimy skin.

Athens soaked into every pore of my body. Even though I wanted to avoid the tourists at the Acropolis, I found myself skulking around the base like a street cat.
